About
A City Centre Waterfront Precinct that builds on the historical character and function of the city centre waterfront as an authentic working waterfront, fine grain city precincts and a place of arrival, departure and celebration adjacent the Waitematā.
Re-establishing connectivity between the CBD and the Waterfront and creating a continuous accessible (and working) waterfront edge. Auckland downtown is a place of arrival and departure with three converging transport nodes (Britomart east, Britomart west and the ferry basin). Quay street proposes to be a pedestrian-friendly waterfront street that connects the central city to Auckland’s maritime identity and waterfront experience. The place of arrival and welcome mat to the city. Delivered organically/phased over time. Customs Street has renewed importance in the city as a busy two-sided city street as well as a significant east-west movement corridor. To realise the harbour stitches, it must also improve the north-south pedestrian crossing experience, de-clutter the footpath, and provide an overall uplift in streetscape quality.
A series of North/South Streets, each with a different scale, form and function. Characterised by a variety of pedestrian, vehicular and public transport connections to the Waterfront, the north/south streets enable Queen Street to successfully function as a pedestrian/civic corridor provide clear view shafts to the Waitematā. A connected city laneway network linking the fine-grain streets and spaces to form a human-scaled streetscape environment promoting public life and activity.
