STUDIO Papamahi
About
We are an award wining, design-led and studio-based practice operating at the intersection of ecology, landscape and urban design. Founded in 2013 our studios now have 18 talented urbanists, landscape architects, makers and doers, devoted to creating meaningful places and spaces.
Values
We see landscape and ecology as models for both form and process. We are interested in the narrative potential of landscape, connecting people with place, forms that tell stories and processes that engage land, water and people.
Land (Whenua) - we seek to reveal underlying urban morphologies, landscape structures, and natural processes that enable inclusive, accessible, and adaptive spaces that cater to diverse communities, support climate adaption, and promote well-being
Water (Moana) - we embrace the critical sustainable practices of catchment management, green infrastructure, and stormwater strategies that enhance and utilise water systems as resources for design, recreation, ecological restoration, climate adaptation and fostering well-being.
People (Tangata) - we create meaningful and inclusive environments that reflect the diverse needs of communities, enabling belonging and empowering people to actively engage in the evolution of their landscapes.
Approach
Our approach integrates a site-specific approach (‘Land’) with a creative and rigorous design process (‘LAB’). Our work reflects our interrogation of the relationships between the ecologies and systems of urbanism, landscape and place.
Urbanism (Tāone) - we seek to reveal underlying urban morphologies, landscape structures, and natural processes to inform urban and infrastructural outcomes.
Landscape (Taiao) - we use landscape and ecology as lenses through which to interrogate and generate site-specific and design-led responses.
Place (Wāhi) - we adopt a place and people-centred approach that engages connection, participation and stewardship
Land + Water + People converge to define the way we plan, experience, and design urban environments.
