DALDY STREET LINEAR PARK

About

LandLAB led the urban and landscape design for the Wynyard Quarter South precinct which includes stage 2 of the award winning Daldy Street Linear Park.

Daldy Street ‘Linear Park’ provides the second of the Wynyard Quarters strategic urban design moves. This is a ‘hybrid’ space that combines the functionality and linearity of a street with the rhythmical spatial sequences and diverse programs of a park.

The design intent of the ‘park axis’ is to provide a legible and accessible continuous landscape connection from Victoria Park northwards through the centre of the Quarter to the future Headland Park. It provides a strategic route for passenger transport, pedestrians and cyclists through the Wynyard Quarter as well as recreational and social spaces. The park and street will be activated by adjacent retail and commercial activity within the Wynyard Quarter.

The existing industrial morphology and street grid of the Quarter is overlain with a new hierarchy of low speed-shared surface east-west streets and a laneway network to provide legibility, accessibility and connectivity. The streetscape upgrades integrates low impact design, sustainable infrastructure, public transport + walking/cycling enhancements and enabling green infrastructure under a ‘One Wynyard’ design ethos.

Low impact design, sustainable infrastructure, movement networks and episodic design elements are woven into an integrated landscape system. This provides for a journey and continuous green corridor between ‘land’ (the pre-reclamation waters edge) and ‘sea’ (harbour).

Landscape is prioritised to reconnect, re-vitalise and re-energize the post-industrial ‘terrain vague’ of the Quarter’s core while bringing together people, ecology, infrastructure buildings and landscape. Landscape is prioritised to reconnect, revitalise and re-energise the post-industrial ‘terrain vague’ of the Quarter’s core while bringing together people, ecology, infrastructure, buildings and landscape.

The design language draws on the post-industrial and coastal character, integrating elements of marine archaeology and establishes a native and ecological planting aesthetic driven by fundamental water sensitive design strategies and ecological diversity.
