VXV PLAZA
About
In early 2020 LandLAB and Warren Mahoney partnered in a successful design competition Request for Proposal process facilitated by clients 151 Property. LandLAB led the public realm and urban design contributions within the RFP while W&M led the architectural, interiors and branding opportunities. Following a successful RFP competition phase, LandLAB led a technically challenging design and construction observation process to reconsider and adapt an existing under-performing space dominated by vehicle access and circulation.
Microsoft House Plaza represents an adaptive reuse strategy and spatial reconfiguration of an existing commercial plaza space to redefine a verdant, vibrant visual identity and establish a destination that supports new commercial and placemaking experiences within the broader Viaduct X Victoria precinct where Auckland meets the sea.
This project re-programmes the site through landscape, architecture, and placemaking strategies to deliver a creative, flexible, and environmentally comfortable waterfront open space that supports adjacent retail, food and beverage and commercial activities and provides a new destination within Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour Precinct.
The re-imagined plaza is a counterpoint to the commercial office workplace environment, offering a range of informal occupation opportunities drawing in reference to Tamaki Makaurau’s surrounding volcanic motutere and harbour landscapes.
This project demonstrates careful consideration of the site's strengths and constraints and its relationship with the surrounding context, as well as its place in the broader Wynyard and Victoria Quarter contexts.
