TAURANGA CITY CENTRE

LandLAB were engaged by Tauranga City Council to develop a masterplan for the Tauranga waterfront Precinct. The project builds on LandLAB’s earlier work on the Tauranga City Centre Spatial Framework and Civic Heart Masterplan. The overall vision for the water front is the ‘Landing Place’ (Tauranga) - an authentic, engaging waterfront destination which reveals historic and cultural synergies between ‘land’ (green/whenua) and ‘sea’ (blue/wai)’ for Tauranga.

Enhancement of the Tauranga waterfront over time provides an exciting opportunity to curate a new series of urbans precincts that compliments the existing character and aspirations of Tauranga’s town centre and harbour open spaces. This project will reveal authentic waterfront histories, program new waters edge activities and reinforce a visionary urban identity for Tauranga that resonates with both visitors and locals.

“Our waterfront. Our place...and its going to be great” Tauranga City Centre has one of the most stunning waterfront settings in the country. The Waterfront Masterplan guides its transformation into an authentic, vibrant and dynamic waters edge destination that reinforces Tauranga’s identity as an urban waterfront city.

The DNA of the waterfront is informed by the authenticity and urbanity of the existing town centre with its Low rise human scale, street grid and collection of waters edge buildings, wharfs and piers,. The contemporary re-interpretation of existing warehouse, shed and high street building typologies will ensure an authentic fit between old and new.

The central waterfront zone will establish the spiritual and social heart and focal point. of the city centre that supports both movement and place functions and provide the focal point for recreation and community and a catalyst for a complimentary program of place making and strategic activation.

The Waterfront Masterplan is a comprehensive vision which considers the planning and design of the central waterfront across a range of scales: the harbour wide scale, the center city scale, and the waterfront scale. Each scale carries a particular thematic concept that will transform the image, character and identity of the central waterfront and re¬define its relationship to the city as a whole.

The keys to the spatial strategy at this level are:

1. Reconnecting the City Centre Waterfront to the wider ‘Blue’ network of Tauranga.

2. Bringing back the authentic working waterfront activities to the city centre.

3. Reconnecting the city centre and Mount Maunganui via public/ private water transport

4. Optimising access to deep water.
