UoA Recreation Centre Plaza
The University of Auckland’s new Recreation and Wellness Centre was recently completed - including a LandLAB designed plaza space. A topographical and infrastructural response to a challenging set of technical and functional design requirements has established a flexible plaza and habitable roofscape above subterranean aquatic facilities.
The centre piece of the space is a sculptural landform that references the geology of the wider Tamaki Makaurau and Te Waitematā Harbour landscapes. This terraced, organic and engaging social form enables the space to provide a new range of recreational activities and emerging social programs that will catalyse campus life.
The new plaza establishes a flexible and adaptable urban surface that transforms a formerly disparate network of buildings, laneways and spaces into a singular cohesive ground plane connected to the adjacent Albert Park.
